When to Pack Your Hospital Bag?
You should have your hospital bag ready to go by 36 weeks or 37 weeks pregnant, just in case you go into labor before your due date.
You'll probably be in the hospital for two to three days if you've had a vaginal delivery and about two to five days if you give birth by C-section.
It’s fine to throw some items in at the last minute, like your toothbrush, but you’ll want your bag mostly packed and easily accessible by this point in your pregnancy.
For Mom
Essentials :
Hospital paperwork, a picture ID (driver's license or other ID), your insurance card, the name and phone number of your baby's doctor, and hospital registration forms. Even if you've already registered at the hospital, some need to confirm your records before they can admit you.
Have copies of your medical records handy, so that your doctors can easily review your medical history.
Personal items:
Toiletries:
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.
- lip balm(Your lips can get chapped during labor), deodorant, a brush and comb.
- Face wash and moisturizer, Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash and hair ties.
- Pack a plastic bag to pop dirty clothes in.
Maternity Pads:
Maternity pads, also known as postpartum pads, are specially designed sanitary napkins for use after childbirth. They are significantly different from regular pads due to their unique features that provide complete comfort to the new mothers.
Clothes:
- Nightgown, slippers, and socks.
- Hospitals and birth centers may provide gowns and socks for you to use, but some women also bring their own. Choose a loose, comfortable gown
- Comfortable nursing bras.
- Nipple cream and oil to massage your breast.
Baby Feeding Pillow:
The baby Feeding Pillow will make breastfeeding the baby quite comfortable as you have to sit and bend forward, which may create back pain post-delivery.
Heavy-duty maternity pads:
It’s normal to bleed a lot after birth, and maternity pads are softer and more absorbent than standard pads.
Manual breast pump:
After the birth your breasts may get hard due to excess milk, you can keep your breast soft by using the pump to make it easy for your newborn. If your baby is not taking the milk well then milk clots may develop in your breast which may cause serious issues later. In such cases removing the milk with the help of a breast pump will solve the issue.
Underwear:
Pack several pairs of comfortable underwear that are large enough to wear over heavy-duty maternity pads.
Phone and charger:
You can stay in touch with loved ones, use it to take those first few pictures, and post your special news on social media.
For Baby :
A Baby blanket:
Take a warm, soft one if the weather is cold. A light cotton cover will probably be enough in summer.
Cotton clothes pieces (lots of them):
In India, people usually use old saree clothes to cover the baby. old cotton clothes are soft and comfortable for a newborn's skin. You can buy such clothes and wash them once before using them. If you are using an old saree or dupatta cloth then make sure you remove the border. The border of the clothe remains hard after multiple washes too which may irritate your baby.
Weather-appropriate clothes:
A sweater and knit cap if it’s cold out, or a cap with a little brim if it's sunny and warm.
Baby hand gloves:
Many newborns have long and pointed nails. They can scratch their own face, eyes, or nose.
- Postpartum Care Items:
Taking care of yourself after delivery is just as important as caring for your newborn:
- Maternity pads or adult diapers.
- Nipple cream for breastfeeding comfort.
- Comfortable and stretchy postpartum underwear.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers (as approved by your healthcare provider).
- Belly support band for added comfort.
Extras:
Pillow and Blanket:
A comfortable pillow and blanket from home.
Snacks for Support Person:
Snacks and drinks for your partner or support person.
Going-Home Outfit:
A comfortable and loose outfit for yourself to wear when leaving the hospital.
Camera:
If your phone doesn't have a good camera, consider bringing a camera to capture special moments.
Jewelry: The hospital does not allow any kind of gold, silver, or Diamond jewelry in the labor room, so make sure you do not wear or carry one with you while going to the hospital.
Do not bring diapers or wipes! The hospital has all the diapers and wipes you’ll need.
